Phonofone

An iPod speaker in the form of a ceramic phonofone by artist Tristan Zimmermann. When i was in Taiwan i saw one of these in an apartment decorating store, and now all i want to do is make one (and i say make because i couldn't possibly afford the $500 price tag). It is entirely made of clay, with a place to dock your ipod and two holes to stick your earbuds into, boosting the audio of the earbuds to roughly the maximum of laptop speakers. The horn and the ceramic medium amplify the music without the use of any external power or batteries. I WANT ONE.

Rotary

Currently wanting to waste all my money on an unnecessary amount of 60s-70s era rotary phones. Especially the more fancy looking ones. (Another birthday wishlist item :] )

Altered Book Swap

The Altered Book Swap consists of five girls, Emma, Tara, Helen, Karen, and Michelle. The girls use second hand books as their canvases, selecting each book with a concept as to how the book will inspire its altering. Each book has a sign in area, where the girls could write their name, date of alteration, and a brief description about the ideas behind it. Each girl begins with one book, being the first to alter it. Then at the end of each month, they girls meet up and the books are passed between all of the participants, so that every month each girl has a single book to alter. The books continue to rotate, and at the end, each book will be returned to the initial girl who altered the book, keeping it as a unique piece of collaborative art.

One of the girls's books including all of the first alterations made to the book:

I want one.

Home

My trip to Taiwan was cut a little short. Originally scheduled to leave Taiwan on the fourth of July, i arrived in San Francisco on the the 24th. I really enjoyed my time in Taiwan, going to the subway to go on strolls with my grandfather every morning, visiting my family, delicious food stuffed into my face every meal, great shopping, everything. However much fun i had, it was really lonely being there. My cousins that were close to my age weren't out for summer break yet, and the other ones all worked during the day. The time difference made it relatively difficult for me to talk to my friends at home anytime before midnight. And although i'm certain that my scheduled trip to Japan and the extra days in taiwan would have held a few fun little adventures, and as whiney as this sounds, i was really lonely. So i decided to change my flight to come back a week and a half earlier. Maybe i'm crazy, but i feel so much better now that i'm back in California. Currently i'm in staying with my sister in her house in Nor Cal (my flight flew into San Francisco) and i'm driving down with all of my stuff on the 4th of July (my original arrival date to SF).

Eats

All of the delicious food that i have eaten so far since i've gotten to Taiwan. My relatives are getting SUPER annoyed because everytime a plate of food comes out i make them wait until i get a good shot (exposure and focusing wise) of it. This happens at EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL. I really am starting to worry about how much longer they'll put up with this.

Taiwan Update

For those of you who don't know, I am currently in Taiwan. Immediately after my last final i packed my things for seven hours straight (with possibly half an hour squished in there where i whined about having to pack), dropped my things off at my sister's house, went to the San Francisco airport, took a flight at 1am to Taipei, landed, then went to what was once my maternal grandparents' house for my grandmother's funeral.

I never knew my grandmother that well. It was a combination of the fact that i lived in America and she in Taiwan, the fact that i very rarely visited Taiwan and as far as i know she never came to the states, and the fact that both of us spoke very little Chinese (i spoke mostly english and she spoke mostly taiwanese). I am sad that i never got to know her, which i think is why i am most upset. I feel like i should know somebody that is directly responsible for the fact that i am alive. If she was never around then my mother would have never been born, and then my dad would have never married her and i would have never been popped out of the womb.I also found it really upsetting to see my family so upset.

I will be in Taiwan for the next month, and i am enjoying everything so far (even the funeral, which is morbid to say, but i enjoyed the fact that i got to spend time with my family). I am probably going to blog compulsively, as to keep track of everything i did instead of a huge summary at the end of my trip going "yeah, so i went to the zoo and it rained."

On The Road

Finals are next week, and i am currently avoiding studying. So, to alleviate this problem i am posting pictures from my On The Road assignment that i did for my photo class a few weeks ago. Essentially the assignment was to go someplace that wasn't Santa Cruz by car, by bus, by plane, by train, on foot, etc and photograph it. I went by plane from San Jose to Los Angeles.

*Sorry for the images being different sizes =\

Noodles

I remember when lookbook first started up, and i got a message on myspace with an invite code. Since then lookbook has been a constant source of fashion inspiration for me. Not in a "blatantly ripping off" kind of way, but kind of. Santa Cruz is still a little chilly, and i am also feeling homesick for the Valley (i know, right?). In the valley it will by scorching hot, so hot that i probably won't be able to wear the outfits that i want to, as the materials, even cotton, may be too heavy. But regardless, i am wishing for warmer weather and cuter outfits. Lookbook user, Noodles has a bunch of really adorable outfits, which will be in my "fashion inspiration" folder on my computer this summer.
